Chinese Tallow spreads across Birmingham streamside corridors
(Triadica sebifera) is establishing itself across the Birmingham area with striking speed — 37 sightings over the past year trace a spreading front from Valley Creek north to Jasper, east to Irondale and St. Clair County, with new arrivals just noted in Redmont Park and Bluff Park this week. This Chinese ornamental, brought to the Southeast a century ago for soap and landscape value, has become one of the region's most effective woody invaders. It thrives exactly where pressure is already mounting: the disturbed, wet-edged ground that lines creek banks and roadsides. Once established, the tree crowds out the native understory that creek-bank insects and birds depend on. Its dense shade suppresses the plants below it. Leaf litter from Chinese Tallow also inhibits the growth of neighboring vegetation — not just by blocking light, but by releasing compounds that actively prevent other plants from taking hold. Birds eat its waxy white seeds readily and carry them into new ground. That is the mechanism by which a single ornamental planting can spread across an entire watershed over decades. If you spot one in your neighborhood, log it on iNaturalist — early reports are what make a spreading front like this visible in the first place.

Three Creek and all its major branches are impaired. Every assessed segment from headwaters to mouth, plus the adjacent Applewhite Swamp, now carries an official failing grade for water quality. The Meherrin River that receives these waters carries the same designation — six of twenty-four water bodies assessed within eight miles of here bear formal impairment listings, a density of failure that reflects how thoroughly nutrient and sediment pressure has worked through this blackwater stream network. July is when that pressure cuts deepest. Blackwater streams are naturally low in dissolved oxygen and poorly buffered against additional nutrient loading, and summer heat pushes dissolved oxygen toward hypoxia well before any regulatory threshold is formally breached. Some segments now have cleanup plans in place; others remain listed with no remediation strategy yet written. The conditions here are reversible, but they require sustained intervention. The Algonquian-speaking peoples who depended on these fisheries for thousands of years knew these streams as clear and productive. The current listings are a measure of how far those conditions have drifted from the ecological baseline these waters once held.

The streams draining this old bituminous coalfield have spent thirty years earning back their biology, and that recovery was never passive — it was engineered, sustained, and paid for. Lime-dosing stations, settling ponds, and passive constructed wetlands have held iron concentrations and acidity in check since the 1990s, converting tributaries of Chest Creek and Blacklick Creek from orange, metallic channels into waters that once again support macroinvertebrates, fish, and the aquatic food webs that depend on both. What the current compliance record shows is alarming: a striking number of those treatment systems are out of permit compliance at the same moment, including the Winburne AMD abatement site and the Mine 31 AMD plant, along with a long roster of deep mine discharge points — among them 54 JOB SGL 184 and 81 JOB - Fulkerson III. The convergence of these failures in a single season is not a paperwork problem — it is a biological one. Midsummer is precisely when this matters most. Low, warm stream flows carry the least dissolved oxygen and have the weakest capacity to dilute or buffer additional metals and acid loading. Iron floc, which precipitates out of AMD-laden water and smothers stream substrates, is most destructive when flows are slow and the benthos has no scouring event to look forward to for weeks. Pennsylvania's Uplands and Valleys of Mixed Land Use carry a particularly dense legacy of underground mine workings, and the hydrology of those workings means that discharge volumes from deep mine portals often increase during dry periods, as regional groundwater gradients stabilize and mine pool levels equalize — pushing more acidic, metal-laden water into the surface network just as the streams are least equipped to handle it. The recovery of these waters was one of the more consequential restoration stories in the Central Appalachians. By the late nineteenth century, bituminous coal extraction had altered drainage chemistry across vast stretches of the plateau, and by mid-twentieth century many tributaries of the upper Susquehanna watershed ran pH values below 4, essentially devoid of fish. The passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act in 1977 and subsequent amendments created both the regulatory framework and the bonding mechanisms — however imperfect — that eventually funded the treatment infrastructure now at risk. Thirty years of biological recovery can be undone in a single summer if iron and sulfate loading returns to pre-treatment levels. The benthic macroinvertebrate communities that recolonized these streams are dominated by sensitive EPT taxa — Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera — whose larvae are among the first to disappear when pH drops or dissolved oxygen is displaced by metal loading. The broader ecological context here is the Appalachian mixed mesophytic forests, one of the most biodiverse temperate forest systems on Earth, whose stream network integrity underpins everything from amphibian breeding habitat to the invertebrate prey base for migratory songbirds. Brook trout — Salvelinus fontinalis — are both an indicator species and a cultural touchstone in this landscape; they were present in these headwaters before coal extraction, absent for most of the twentieth century, and slowly returning where treatment systems held. A lapse in AMD control sufficient to crash macroinvertebrate communities would set back brook trout recolonization by years, potentially decades, depending on the severity and duration of the discharge pulse. What to watch for in the coming weeks is a cascade rather than a single event. Upstream treatment failures translate to downstream impacts on a lag that depends on hydrology — often days to weeks — which means the biological signal may not appear until conditions have already worsened considerably. Monitoring stations on Chest Creek and Blacklick Creek should be tracking pH, specific conductance, and iron concentration at minimum. The question these watersheds have already answered once — what happens when the treatment stops — is one that managers and regulators cannot afford to let them answer a second time.

, , , and are all leafing into their July bloom across the native forb community of the glacial till plains. Observed at multiple sites within fifty kilometers of the city center, these species are ecological remnants of the tallgrass prairie mosaic that once stretched continuously across this landscape, shaped by Pleistocene glaciation into some of the most fertile and botanically diverse terrain in eastern North America. This July flowering window was once tended deliberately. The Miami and Potawatomi peoples managed these prairies with fire for centuries, maintaining the open structure that blazing star and lobelia depend on for dominance. Without regular disturbance, woody encroachment displaces them within years. In the fragments that survive here — cemetery prairies, restored roadsides, park edges — this midsummer bloom is among the most important of the year for the specialist native bees that evolved alongside these plants and have no functional substitute for them.

(Cacyreus marshalli) — a small copper-tinted butterfly native to southern Africa — has been confirmed this July in central Toulouse gardens. The insect arrived in Europe as a stowaway in ornamental pelargonium shipments, likely in the 1990s through the horticultural trade, and has been advancing steadily northward through Mediterranean France over three decades. What makes this arrival consequential is the damage the larvae inflict. Unlike leaf-feeding insects, the caterpillars bore directly into pelargonium stems and consume the plant from within, causing heavily infested specimens to simply collapse. Their appearance now in the urban gardens of central Toulouse — window boxes, terraces, balcony planters stacked closely across the city — suggests that what looks like a barrier of concrete and pavement is instead functioning as a corridor. Each potted geranium becomes a stepping stone for the next generation, and the network of connected gardens acts as a ladder for the species' further inland expansion.

(Platanthera clavellata) are in peak bloom right now, with nine sightings recorded since late April — more than any other species here this summer, and the most recent logged just two days ago. This orchid is a specialist of wet pine savannas, pocosin margins, and boggy stream edges, habitats among the most threatened in the Mid-Atlantic and typically lost to drainage, intensive agriculture, or plantation forestry. Indigenous peoples of this region, including the Chowanoke whose territory encompassed this area, used orchid-rich wetlands as seasonal landmarks — places that held their character through drought and flood because the underlying hydrology was cold, slow, and deep. Nine sightings in midsummer, when dissolved oxygen stress peaks in warm surface waters and rare species elsewhere are struggling, suggests the seepage systems feeding these bogs are still working. These are the kinds of signals worth paying attention to — small-flowered, easy to overlook, and quietly telling.

On the nights of July 20–21, lights along the ridges and hollows drew a strikingly diverse moth assemblage — at least 40 confirmed species within a few miles of each other. (Eacles imperialis) with wingspans reaching eight inches, (Antheraea polyphemus), , grass-veneers, slug moths, lichen moths, and sphinx moths all active within the same window. This breadth of species in midsummer is quiet evidence of landscape health. Most of these moths depend on specific native host trees—oaks, maples, cherries, hickories—and a mix this diverse emerges only where ridges and hollows still hold structural variety intact. Pennsylvania's second-growth Allegheny forests are, for moths, among the most productive habitats in the eastern United States, and late July is when that productivity peaks. It is a richness that moves almost entirely in the dark, well outside the range of ordinary attention.

butterflies (Erynnis baptisiae) appeared along the Fall Creek corridor near the old Arsenal grounds on June 13 — a small but ecologically precise signal. These skippers are obligate specialists: their caterpillars feed only on wild blue indigo, and an adult turning up at this urban site suggests something more than a passing vagrant. Wild blue indigo was once a dominant forb in the wet prairie and savanna mosaic that blanketed this part of the landscape before large-scale conversion to agricultural and urban use. It is not a plant that colonizes new ground easily, and its presence — reliable enough to draw a Duskywing — points to either a surviving prairie remnant or a native planting mature enough to sustain reproduction. In a fragmented city landscape, that is a quiet measure of what ecological restoration can accomplish, even in pieces.

— the ocean's largest species, with tentacles trailing longer than a blue whale — have made repeated appearances along the outer beaches and harbor mouths since late May. Twenty-five documented sightings from late May through mid-July, concentrated around Herring Cove, Provincetown Harbor, Race Point, and MacMillan Pier, tell an unusual story. These are cold-water animals whose inshore presence normally collapses before midsummer as New England surface temperatures peak. Yet here they still are, with fresh sightings logged as recently as July 17. This sustained midsummer arrival likely reflects a thermal refuge — cooler water lingering in stratified layers just beneath the surface, buying these jellies weeks of extra time even as the Gulf of Maine warms faster than nearly any ocean on earth. Their trailing tentacles deliver a real sting and shelter juvenile fish seeking cover, making their presence in heavily visited waters significant for both swimmers and the young fish that depend on them for survival. How long this cold-water holdout persists against a warming sea remains an open question as summer deepens.
