Block Island Land Trust

Established by an act of the Rhode Island legislature in 1986 and funded by a 3% fee on real estate transfers on Block Island, the Land Trust acquires, holds, and manages open space, agricultural, and coastal property in the Town of New Shoreham, including barrier beaches, marshes, well fields, and recreational land. Its holdings provide habitat for rare and endangered species, including the federally endangered American burying beetle and Rhode Island's largest population of northern blazing star, and it has helped bring the island's preserved open space to over 46% of its total land area.
