The Apalachee Land Conservancy, established in 1984 by Leon County residents responding to development pressure, is dedicated to protecting the nature of the Apalachee Region in Florida. Its primary tool is the conservation easement, a legal agreement that permanently limits development on a property while letting the landowner continue to own and use the land; through this approach it has acquired interests in floodplains, wetlands, urban and suburban greenspace, and critical wildlife habitat.
