Channel Islands Cetacean Research Unit

The Channel Islands Cetacean Research Unit (CICRU) is a 501(c)(3) based in Santa Barbara, California that studies and monitors whales, dolphins, and porpoises in the Santa Barbara Channel, treating cetaceans as sentinel species for ocean health. It responds to roughly 30 cetacean strandings a year and performs necropsies to identify disease, biotoxins, and human-produced toxins affecting the local marine ecosystem.
