The presence of stag beetles in a place is, in that sense, a slow-burn ecological audit: each flying adult represents a successful larval run that began years before the tree it consumed finally fell.

The next two to three weeks are the critical observation period. Males in flight are conspicuous — large, noisy, and partial to warm evenings — but females are far harder to find, spending most of their time at ground level, excavating soil near rotting stumps to lay eggs. Any records of females, or of apparent combat sites on standing oaks, would help map the active breeding nodes in this landscape. As this flight window closes, attention should shift to identifying and protecting the veteran oak stumps and root systems that will carry the next generation underground through the years ahead.
